Preventing Jobsite Flooring Damage
During major construction or remodeling, finished floors—such as hardwood, marble, travertine, and porcelain tile—are vulnerable to severe damage. Heavy tools can drop from ladders, scaffolding legs can dent wood, and grit on boot soles can grind scratches into polished stone. Replacing or refinishing a damaged floor at the end of a project is a costly setback that can wipe out job profits.
Contractors use temporary floor protection systems to shield finished surfaces. While protective paper (like Ram Board) is useful for preventing paint spills, it offers virtually zero impact protection. For heavy construction zones, you must use a rigid timber overlay—such as plywood or hardboard—to distribute heavy point loads and absorb impacts.

The Multi-Layer Protection Layup
Never place plywood or OSB sheets directly onto a finished floor. Debris (like plaster dust, drywall screws, or sand) trapped between the rigid protection sheet and the finished floor will act as sandpaper under foot traffic, scratching the floor.
The Standard Three-Layer Protocol
- Bottom Layer (Soft Buffer): Lay a continuous run of heavy-duty protective paper (Ram Board) or a thin closed-cell foam underlayment. Tape all joints with painter's tape to prevent dust from getting underneath.
- Middle Layer (Impact Shield): Lay 1/8\" tempered hardboard (Masonite) or 1/2\" CDX plywood over the paper buffer. Hardboard is ideal for most residential applications because it is thin, easy to cut, and distributes point loads. Use 1/2\" plywood for commercial sites where scaffolding, scissor lifts, or heavy hand trucks will be used.
- Joint Sealing: Tape the joints of the plywood or hardboard sheets together using a high-strength duct tape or scrim tape. Do not tape the protection boards to the finished floor; tape them only to each other. This creates a floating rigid deck.

Edge and Threshold Protection
The edges of the protection sheets and transitions at doors are high-risk areas where workers can trip or debris can collect:
- Tapered Thresholds: Where the protection deck ends (e.g., at doorways or transitions to carpet), chamfer the edge of the hardboard or install a rubber transition ramp to prevent tripping.
- Tape Boundaries: Secure the perimeter of the paper underlayment to the baseboards using a low-tack blue painter's tape. Do not leave blue tape on finished floors or wood trim for more than 14 days, as the adhesive can cure and damage the finish upon removal.
- Scaffolding Pads: Under heavy scaffolding legs, place a double layer of 3/4\" plywood pads (12\"x12\") to distribute the concentrated load across a wider area of the subfloor.
