Every standing desk review focuses on desktop material, wobble, and price — but the motor system determines how long the desk will actually function. A desk with a gorgeous walnut top and a failing motor is a very expensive fixed-height table. Understanding motor architectures helps you predict reliability, noise, speed, and repair costs before you buy.

The Three Motor Architectures

Single Motor (Belt-Driven)

A single motor sits in the crossbar and drives both legs through a mechanical linkage — usually a steel connecting rod or a belt-and-pulley system. The motor rotates, the rod transmits torque to both leg columns simultaneously.

Advantages:

  • Lowest cost — typically $100–$200 less than dual-motor equivalents
  • Fewer electronic components = fewer potential failure points in theory
  • Simpler wiring (one motor cable, one controller)

Disadvantages:

  • Slower (0.6–1.1"/sec typical)
  • Lower weight capacity (120–200 lbs typical)
  • The connecting rod introduces mechanical play that worsens over time
  • Asymmetric wear: if one side of the linkage wears faster, the desktop develops a tilt
  • Louder — the belt/rod mechanism adds 5–10 dB of mechanical noise on top of motor noise

Dual Motor (Direct-Drive)

Each leg contains its own motor, and an electronic controller synchronizes them. No mechanical linkage between legs — just a wire carrying the sync signal.

Triple Motor

What's a "Cycle"?

One cycle = one full extension from minimum to maximum height. At 4 transitions per day (sit-stand-sit-stand), a dual-motor desk rated for 15,000 cycles will last approximately 10.3 years of weekday use. A single-motor desk at 6,000 cycles: 4.1 years. This is why motor longevity matters.

Noise: Decibels in Context

Manufacturers report noise in decibels, but without context those numbers mean nothing. Here's a reference scale:

Important: These are loaded measurements (80 lbs of equipment on the desktop). Unloaded specs reported by manufacturers are typically 3–5 dB lower, which can be misleading. Always look for "at load" measurements. A 3 dB difference represents a perceived ~50% change in loudness to the human ear, so the gap between a 45 dB dual motor and a 52 dB single motor is significant.

Duty Cycle: The Hidden Limitation

Most standing desk motors have a 10% duty cycle — 2 minutes of operation followed by 18 minutes of rest. This is an industry standard thermal limitation: the motors are brush or brushless DC motors rated for intermittent use, and running them continuously causes overheating and permanent damage.

In practice, a full sit-to-stand transition takes 17–43 seconds depending on motor speed. At 4 transitions per day, you use roughly 1.5–3 minutes of motor time — well within the duty cycle. The duty cycle only matters if you're triggering the motor repeatedly in rapid succession (testing, adjusting, or in commercial environments with multiple users).

Exception: Some triple-motor commercial desks (Linak-based systems at $1,200+) are rated for continuous duty. These are designed for factories and medical environments where desks change height dozens of times per shift.

Motor Brands: Who Makes What

Most standing desk brands don't manufacture their own motors. They source from a handful of OEM suppliers:

  • Jiecang: Supplies motors for Uplift, FlexiSpot, Branch, and dozens of smaller brands. Their motors are the most widely used in the industry. Quality ranges from entry-level single motors to premium three-stage dual systems.
  • Linak (LogicData): Danish/Austrian manufacturer used in premium commercial desks. More expensive, rated for higher cycle counts, and offers continuous-duty models.
  • Kaidi: Chinese OEM common in budget single-motor desks under $300. Adequate for entry-level but shorter lifespan.
  • TiMOTION: Taiwanese manufacturer used in mid-range desks. Known for reliable dual-motor systems at competitive prices.

Leg Stages: Two-Stage vs Three-Stage

The number of telescoping stages in each leg interacts directly with motor performance:

Two-stage legs: Two nested tubes. The motor extends the inner tube upward.

  • Wider minimum diameter (more industrial look)
  • Slightly more stable at maximum height
  • Limited height range (typically 24"–47")
  • Common in desks under $400

Three-stage legs: Three nested tubes. The motor extends two inner tubes sequentially.

  • Narrower minimum diameter (sleeker profile)
  • Greater total height range (22"–52" possible)
  • Slightly more wobble potential due to additional junction

Triple motor if: You're buying an L-shaped desk wider than 70", need 400+ lbs capacity, or are outfitting a commercial/shared workspace.
