The Birch Plywood Shift
Historically, the term "Baltic Birch" was synonymous with Russian Birch. Russia controlled over 70% of the world's supply of premium birch logs. However, due to recent trade sanctions and import bans, importing Russian timber into North America and the EU is prohibited.
This has caused a massive shift in the plywood market.
Key Market Differences
- Pre-Sanctions Russian Birch: Characterized by B/BB or BB/BB grading, 5x5 sheets, and very affordable prices ($45 for a 3/4" sheet in 2020).
- European Baltic Birch (Finland, Latvia, Estonia): The premier legal alternative. Finnish Birch uses identical Betula pendula trees and has superior manufacturing standards, but is priced higher ($110+ per sheet).
- Chinese Birch Imports: Many suppliers attempted to fill the gap with Chinese plywood. Be cautious: Chinese "birch" plywood often uses a soft poplar core with a paper-thin birch veneer. It does not have the strength or weight of genuine European Baltic Birch.
