  • Inspect the Stamp: Genuine Baltic birch from compliant countries (Estonia, Latvia, Finland) carries clear stamps indicating the mill origin, FSC or PEFC certification numbers, and country of origin. If a panel is stamped "Made in Vietnam" but is composed of 100% birch veneers with Russian-style 5x5 dimensions (1525mm x 1525mm), be highly suspicious. Birch does not grow in Vietnam; the panels were likely pressed in Russia and transshipped.

  • Demand the Lacey Act Declaration: Distributors are legally required to provide a Lacey Act declaration for imported wood products, detailing the country of harvest. If your supplier cannot or will not produce this document, refuse the shipment.

Workability and Tooling Adjustments

If you are forced to transition from birch to alternative cores, you must adjust your machining strategy. Cores containing eucalyptus or acacia are much more abrasive than birch due to mineral content (silica) in the wood.

Cutting dense import combi-cores with standard table saw blades will dull the carbide teeth rapidly. Switch to micro-grain carbide blades with a high alternate top bevel (ATB) or triple-chip grind (TCG) geometry. On your CNC router, swap standard two-flute straight bits for compression bits.
