Laser Calibration Guide for Plywood
Cutting plywood with a laser requires balancing laser power, travel speed, and frequency (PPI or pulses per inch). Plywood is a composite material made of wood plies and adhesive layers, meaning the laser must burn through both organic wood fibers and synthetic glue lines.
Here is our benchmark calibration chart for CO2 lasers (40W to 100W) when cutting premium Baltic Birch plywood:
| Thickness | Laser Type | Power (%) | Speed (mm/s) | Frequency (Hz/PPI) | Air Assist | Pass Count |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3mm (1/8") | 40W CO2 | 80% | 15 mm/s | 500 Hz | High (20 PSI) | 1 Pass |
| 3mm (1/8") | 80W CO2 | 55% | 35 mm/s | 400 Hz | High (20 PSI) | 1 Pass |
| 6mm (1/4") | 40W CO2 | 90% | 6 mm/s | 600 Hz | High (25 PSI) | 1 Pass |
| 6mm (1/4") | 80W CO2 | 70% | 18 mm/s | 500 Hz | High (25 PSI) | 1 Pass |
| 9mm (3/8") | 80W CO2 | 85% | 8 mm/s | 600 Hz | High (30 PSI) | 2 Passes |
| 12mm (1/2") | 100W CO2 | 80% | 6 mm/s | 500 Hz | High (35 PSI) | 2 Passes |
Key Settings Explained
- Air Assist Pressure: Essential for laser cutting plywood. High-pressure air assist (20-35 PSI) blows away vaporized wood and resin before it can ignite or char the surface. It cools the cut line, preventing flashback soot on the underside.
- Frequency (Hz or PPI): Lower frequencies (300-400 Hz) reduce heat buildup in the material, which reduces charring. Higher frequencies (600+ Hz) create smoother cut edges but can increase charring if the speed is too low.
- Pass Count vs. Speed: For thicker plywood (9mm+), running two faster passes often results in less charring and a narrower kerf than running one slow, high-power pass that cooks the adhesive layer.
