The Kitchen Cabinet Dilemma
When renovating a kitchen, the material used for the cabinet carcasses (boxes) is often overlooked. Most cabinet makers use either Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) or Veneer Core Plywood. While MDF is cheaper, plywood is the preferred choice for high-end, architectural kitchens.
Why Plywood Beats MDF in Kitchens
- Water Resistance: Kitchen cabinets are exposed to moisture from sinks, dishwashers, and cooking steam. MDF acts like a sponge; if water gets past the paint or laminate layer, MDF swells and crumbles. Plywood (especially Baltic Birch with waterproof adhesives) retains its structure even under direct moisture exposure.
- Weight Capacity: Stone countertops (granite, quartz) are incredibly heavy. Plywood has high compressive and shear strength, easily supporting heavy stone slabs without sagging or buckling.
- Hardware Retention: Kitchen cabinet hinges are opened and closed thousands of times. Screws driven into MDF tear out easily because MDF is composed of loose fibers. Plywood fibers grab and hold screw threads tightly, ensuring cabinet doors remain aligned.
