The Two-Letter Code That Determines Everything
Every sheet of plywood sold in North America carries a two-letter grade stamp — something like A/C, B/B, or C/D. The first letter rates the face (the "good" side), and the second rates the back (the side that faces a wall, subfloor, or gets glued down). Understanding what each letter actually means is the difference between buying a $35 sheet for a project that needs a $75 sheet — or wasting $75 on a project where $35 would have been perfect.

Face & Back Grade Definitions
The APA grading system assigns letters A through D based on the number, size, and type of defects permitted on each face of the panel:

Common Grade Combinations & What They Are For
Grade stamps combine face and back designations. Here are the most common combinations you will encounter at the lumber yard:
A/A — Premium Both Sides ($65–$95 per 4×8 sheet)
Both faces are A-grade: smooth, virtually defect-free, ready for clear finish or staining. This is the most expensive commodity plywood grade and is used for high-end cabinetry, furniture where both sides are visible, and architectural panels. If you are building a freestanding bookshelf where both the front and back will be seen, A/A is what you want.
Reality check: True A/A hardwood plywood is rarely stocked at big-box stores. You will typically find it at specialty hardwood dealers. The face veneers are book-matched or slip-matched for consistent grain appearance.
A/B — Premium Face, Good Back ($55–$80)
The face is smooth and clear-finish-ready; the back is solid but may have small patches or minor color variations. This is the go-to grade for cabinet exteriors — the A face shows, and the B back faces the wall. Most cabinet-grade plywood at lumber yards is A/B or A/1 (the veneer-core equivalent).
A/C — Premium Face, Utility Back ($40–$60)
Smooth A face with a rough C back. Used for wall paneling, wainscoting, and any application where one side is permanently hidden. The C back may have open knots, patches, and minor splits, but the glue lines are fully intact — it is structurally sound.
B/B — Good Both Sides ($45–$65)
Both faces are B-grade: solid, sanded, with some visible patches and tight knots. This is the workhorse grade for shop furniture, drawer boxes, and utility shelving where appearance matters but a clear finish is not needed. B/B is also the grade most commonly used for underlayment in high-end flooring installations.
B/C — Good Face, Utility Back ($35–$50)
Solid B face with rough C back. Common for single-sided applications: cabinet backs, drawer bottoms, and structural panels where one side is hidden. Solid value for shop projects.
C/D — Structural / Sheathing ($28–$42)
The construction-grade plywood you see stacked in the lumber aisle. No face is "good" — both sides have knots, knotholes, and rough surfaces. This is rated for structural use: roof sheathing, wall sheathing, and subfloors. It is stamped with a span rating (like 32/16) indicating the maximum rafter and joist spacing. Never use C/D plywood for visible furniture — it is not designed for it.
CDX — A Common Misconception
CDX is not an official APA grade. The "X" stands for "Exposure 1" — meaning the panel can withstand temporary weather exposure during construction but is NOT rated for permanent outdoor use. Builders slang has turned CDX into a shorthand for "cheap construction plywood," but technically it is C/D with Exposure 1 adhesive. For permanent moisture exposure, you need plywood with Exterior adhesive (fully waterproof phenolic resin).
The Exposure Rating: What It Really Means
Beyond face grades, every APA-stamped panel carries an exposure durability classification:

This is where people make expensive mistakes. "Exterior" does not mean the plywood itself is waterproof — it means the glue lines will not fail when wet. The wood veneers themselves will still absorb water, swell, and potentially rot without proper finishing. Hardwood vs Softwood Plywood Grading
To add another layer of complexity, hardwood plywood (birch, oak, maple) and softwood plywood (Douglas fir, Southern pine) use different grading systems:
Softwood Plywood (APA/TECO)
Uses the A-D letter grades described above. The face veneer is typically Douglas fir or Southern pine. Graded and stamped by the APA or TECO.
Hardwood Plywood (HPVA)
Uses a number-based system for the face veneer:

How to Read an APA Grade Stamp
Every APA-rated panel has a stamp (usually on the back or edge) that includes:
- APA logo — confirms third-party grading
- Panel grade — A-C, B-B, C-D, etc.
- Span rating — structural capacity (e.g., 32/16)
- Thickness — nominal thickness
- Exposure durability — Interior, Exposure 1, or Exterior

If a panel does not have an APA or TECO stamp, it has not been independently graded. This is common with imported plywood — which may be perfectly fine but does not carry the same verified quality assurance.

Price vs Grade: Where the Value Lives
Here is the reality that most guides will not tell you: the price jump between grades is not linear. Going from C/D to B/C might add $8–$12 per sheet. Going from B/C to A/C adds another $10–$15. But going from A/C to A/A can add $25–$40 — because the A back requires defect-free veneers on both sides, and those veneers are increasingly scarce.
For most woodworkers, the best value grade is A/C or A/1 — you get a premium face for the visible side and save significantly by accepting a utility back that nobody will ever see. If both sides matter, B/B is the value play before jumping to the A/A premium.
