Roof Structural Loads and Uplift
Roof decking is the structural platform that spans the rafters or trusses, supporting the roof covering (shingles, metal, or tile) and transfering environmental loads to the building structure. The decking must withstand gravity live loads (workers and equipment during installation), environmental snow loads, and wind uplift forces. Wind blowing over a roof acts like air over an airplane wing, creating a vacuum that tries to lift the panels off the rafters.
If the roof decking is too thin or installed incorrectly, it will sag under heavy snow, deflect under foot traffic, or pull away from the framing during storms, compromising the entire structure. Builders must size the decking to meet local building codes, taking into account snow load maps and wind zones.

Decoding the APA Span Rating
The span rating on a sheet of roof plywood is represented by two numbers separated by a slash (e.g., 32/16).
- The first number indicates the maximum allowable spacing of supports (in inches) when the panel is used as roof sheathing.
- The second number indicates the maximum support spacing when used as subflooring.
For example, a 15/32\" panel with a 32/16 rating can safely span rafters spaced up to 32 inches on center when used on a roof. However, residential roof trusses are typically spaced 24 inches on center. Using a 32/16 panel over a 24-inch truss spacing provides a high safety margin against deflection.

The Role of H-Clips
When plywood roof decking is installed, the long edges of the panels run perpendicular to the trusses. The short ends meet on top of the framing. This leaves the horizontal long edges between the trusses unsupported. Under heavy concentrated loads (like a roofing worker's heel), these unsupported edges can flex independently.
To prevent this, building codes require the use of H-clips (also known as panel edge clips). These are small metal clips placed on the edges of the plywood between the trusses.
- Stiffness: They lock the edges of adjacent panels together, sharing the load and reducing deflection.
- Spacing: They automatically establish the required 1/8-inch (3.2mm) expansion gap between sheets.
- Requirement: For trusses spaced 24 inches on center, one H-clip is placed in the center of the span between each truss.
Moisture, Ventilation, and Fastening
Roof sheathing is exposed to extreme temperatures and humidity. Without proper ventilation, moisture from the house will rise into the attic, condense on the cold underside of the plywood, and lead to mold, wood rot, and ply delamination.
Fastening Schedule
Secure the panels using 8d ring-shank nails (0.131\" diameter). Ring-shank nails have ridges that bite into the wood fibers, offering significantly higher resistance to wind uplift than smooth-shank nails. Space the nails 6 inches on center along all panel edges, and 12 inches on center along intermediate trusses. Ensure nails are driven flush with the panel surface. Over-driving nails punctures the face veneer and reduces the shear strength of the connection.
Moisture Mitigation
- Install a high-quality synthetic underlayment over the plywood as soon as it is nailed down to protect it from rain.
- Maintain a continuous attic ventilation path using soffit vents for intake and a ridge vent for exhaust. This keeps the attic temperature close to the outdoor temperature, preventing condensation.
