Micro-Plywood Selection

Manufacturing mechanical 3D wooden puzzles (like wooden clocks or gearboxes) requires precision wood sheets. The pieces must lock together with friction joints, meaning a thickness tolerance variation of even 0.1mm will make the puzzle either too loose or impossible to assemble.

Best Materials

  1. Aircaft Grade Birch Plywood:
  • Thicknesses: 1mm, 1.5mm, 2mm
  • Specs: Standardized by flight safety specifications. It uses ultra-thin micro veneers (a 1.5mm sheet has 3 plies of birch) bonded with phenolic waterproof adhesives. It is virtually unbreakable and can be bent into tight cylinders.
  1. Three-Ply Basswood Craft Sheets:
  • Thicknesses: 1.5mm (1/16") to 3mm (1/8")
  • Specs: Easy to cut with low-power diode desktop lasers (5W-10W). Extremely light color, perfect for detailed engraving.
  • Cons: Lacks the structural strength of Birch, gears can snap if turned too hard.
