Outdoor signage is exposed to harsh environmental factors: UV radiation, driving rain, freezing temperatures, and wind loads. Standard plywood, even if painted, will eventually develop checks (small surface cracks) as the face veneer expands and contracts. MDO vs. Marine Grade for Signs

While Marine-Grade plywood is highly water-resistant, it does not have a fiber overlay. This difference is critical for outdoor signage:

  • Surface Smoothness: MDO provides a flat surface. It has no raised grain, knots, or patches, allowing for vinyl application, screen printing, or hand painting.
  • Paint Lifespan: Paint applied to MDO lasts up to three times longer than paint applied to raw sanded plywood. The resin overlay prevents the wood fibers from moving and cracking the paint film.
  • Water Barrier: The fiber overlay acts as a primary barrier against water vapor. While Marine plywood is glued with waterproof adhesives, its face veneers will still absorb water and warp if not sealed.

Edge Sealing Details for Outdoor Signs

The face of MDO plywood is virtually waterproof, but the cut edges are vulnerable. If water enters the edges, it will wick into the core veneers, leading to edge swelling and delamination.

Edge Sealing Protocol

  1. Sand the Edges: Sand all cut edges with 120-grit paper to remove saw marks and loose fibers.
  2. Apply Primer: Coat the edges with a high-quality exterior primer.
  3. Apply Epoxy or Sealant: For maximum durability, coat the edges with a two-part marine epoxy or a high-solids exterior acrylic latex primer. Let it cure, sand lightly, and apply a second coat.
  4. Finish Paint: Apply two coats of exterior enamel paint over the sealed edges.

Installation and Mounting Guidelines

When mounting MDO signs to posts or walls, prevent water from trapping against the wood:

  • Post Mounting: If mounting between wooden or metal posts, use stainless steel or hot-dip galvanized carriage bolts. Place rubber washers between the bolt head, post, and sign to seal the bolt hole and prevent water from entering.
  • Wall Mounting: If mounting flat against a masonry or wood wall, install spacers (such as plastic standoffs or furring strips) behind the sign. This creates a 1/2-inch air gap, allowing rain to drain and preventing moisture from trapping behind the board.
  • Drip Edge: For large signs, install an aluminum drip cap or flashing along the top edge to redirect rain away from the end grain.
