The Janka hardness test is the standard method for measuring the resistance of wood to denting and wear. Developed by Austrian-born researcher Gabriel Janka in 1906, the test measures the force required to embed a 11.28mm (0.444-inch) diameter steel ball to half its depth into a wood sample. The result is expressed in pounds-force (lbf) in the US system or Newtons (N) or kilonewtons (kN) in the metric system.

The test is standardized as ASTM D1037 in the US and EN 1534 in Europe (with slightly different specimen preparations, which is why you sometimes see different values for the same species in different sources).

Why It Matters for Desks and Furniture

The Janka rating directly predicts how a wood surface will hold up to daily use:

Interpreting the Numbers: What Janka Actually Means in Practice

Under 600 lbf — Soft Woods (Pine, Poplar, Cedar)

These woods dent from a dropped pen. A coffee mug set down firmly will leave an impression. They are suitable for painted furniture where the paint film provides surface hardness, or for rustic styles where dents are considered "character." Finish Matters More Than You Think

  3. Drop test: Drop a steel ball bearing (12mm) from 12 inches onto the surface. Measure the dent diameter. Larger dent = softer wood. Not precise, but comparative.
