This process uses thin strips of real wood veneer (usually 0.5mm to 1.0mm thick) that are pre-coated on the back with a dry, heat-activated hot-melt adhesive. By using a standard household iron or a specialized edge-banding iron, you melt the glue, press the veneer onto the plywood, and trim the excess to create a durable, clean boundary. Most pre-glued iron-on banding sold to consumers uses EVA adhesive. It is highly user-friendly because it can be reheated and adjusted multiple times. However, because EVA is a thermoplastic, it will soften if exposed to high heat (such as near a kitchen oven or dishwasher). PUR adhesive, common in industrial automatic edge-banders, undergoes a chemical cross-linking reaction as it cures with air moisture, meaning it cannot be re-melted once set, making it highly waterproof and heat-resistant.

Step-by-Step Iron-On Edge-Banding Process
Step 1: Plywood Edge Preparation
For the adhesive to bite, the plywood edge must be clean, dry, and flat.
- Cut the plywood using a sharp, high-tooth blade to minimize tear-out and prevent deep saw marks. If your blade leaves waves or burn marks, sand the edge lightly with a 120-grit block to flatten it.
- Check for core voids. If there is a void larger than 3mm, fill it with wood putty or spackling first and let it dry. Hot-melt glue cannot bridge wide gaps; if the banding crosses an open void, it will remain unsupported and will sag or crack under impact.
Step 2: Setting the Iron Temperature
If you are using a standard household clothing iron, set the dial to Cotton / Linen (dry, no steam). Steam will ruin the wood veneer and prevent the glue from setting. If your iron is too cold, the glue won't melt; if it is too hot, it will burn the wood veneer and char the adhesive, destroying its bonding capability. The sweet spot is around 350°F (175°C).
Step 3: Heat and Pressure Application
Cut a strip of edge-banding that is at least 1 inch longer than the plywood edge. This leaves a 1/2-inch overhang on both ends. Center the banding over the edge so you have equal overhang on both sides.
Place the iron at one end of the workpiece. Move the iron slowly along the banding at a rate of about 2 inches per second. Do not stop in one spot, or you will burn the veneer.
Crucial Step: Immediately behind the iron, use a wooden block or a dedicated edge-banding roller to press the hot veneer firmly down into the plywood. Rub the block back and forth with heavy downward pressure. This flattens the melted glue and forces it into the wood pores before it cools. Check the edges as you go; if you see a spot where the banding is lifting, apply the iron again, followed immediately by the roller block.
Step 4: Cooling and Trimming
Allow the edge-banding to cool to room temperature (about 5 to 10 minutes). Do not attempt to trim the banding while the glue is still warm; the hot-melt adhesive will remain soft, and the trimmer will pull the banding away from the edge, leaving a ragged glue line.
Once cool, trim the overhang ends first. Place the plywood face down on a work table, and use a sharp chisel or utility knife to slice the overhanging ends flush with the vertical edges. Cut with the grain, not against it, to prevent the veneer from splitting.
To trim the side overhangs, use a double-sided edge-banding trimmer or a sharp, single-edge razor blade. Slide the trimmer along the edge in the direction of the wood grain. If the wood grain runs upward, trim in that direction; if you trim against the grain, the blade will catch and tear the veneer fibers, leaving a large splinter in your finished edge.
Step 5: Flush Sanding and Easing
After trimming, the edge of the veneer will be razor-sharp and might stick up slightly. Use a sanding block loaded with 180-grit or 220-grit sandpaper held at a 45-degree angle. Lightly sand the corner to ease the sharp edge and blend the veneer flush with the plywood face. Be careful not to sand through the thin face veneer of the plywood itself.
Common Edge-Banding Failures and How to Fix Them
Peeling Edges (Poor Bond)
If the edge-banding peels off easily, it is usually because the glue did not reach activation temperature, or you did not apply enough pressure while the glue was hot. Simply run the iron over the peeled section again, press down firmly with your wooden block, and hold it until the glue cools.
Glue Bleed-Through
If hot-melt glue squeezes out from the sides and gets onto the face veneer, do not try to wipe it off while it is hot; you will smear it over the wood pores. Let it cool completely, then use a sharp chisel held flat to slice the hardened glue beads away. Clean up any remaining residue with a rag lightly dampened with acetone.
Splintered Corners during Trimming
This happens when you trim against the wood grain or use a dull blade. Always check the grain direction before trimming. If you do get a small splinter, fill it immediately with matching wood putty, sand it flat once dry, and seal it.
