FSC Certified Wood: Sourcing Eco-Friendly and Sustainable Desks
What Forest Stewardship Council certification means for plywood sustainability and how to verify claims.

What Is FSC Certification?
The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international, non-profit organization that sets standards for responsible forest management. FSC certification ensures that wood harvested for plywood sheets, standing desks, and paper products comes from forests managed according to strict environmental, social, and economic standards.
By purchasing FSC-certified wood, you prevent deforestation, protect wildlife habitats, and support fair labor conditions for forestry workers.
The Three FSC Label Tiers
Not all FSC labels mean the same thing. Look closely at the packaging logo to understand the mix of materials:
1. FSC 100%
Every fiber of wood in the product comes from an FSC-certified forest. This represents the gold standard of sustainability and is common in high-end marine plywoods like Okoume.
2. FSC Mix
The product contains a mixture of wood from FSC-certified forests, recycled sources, and FSC Controlled Wood. Controlled wood is verified to avoid unacceptable practices like illegal logging or harvesting from high-conservation-value forests. Most premium bamboo and oak plywoods use the FSC Mix label.
3. FSC Recycled
The wood or paper is made entirely from post-consumer recycled materials.
Why FSC is Crucial for Wood-Tech Products
- Habitat Protection: Prevents conversion of natural forests into plantations.
- Climate Mitigation: Certified forests are managed to act as carbon sinks.
- Indigenous Rights: Mandates respect for local indigenous land use rights.
- LEED Points: FSC-certified materials help builders earn points toward green building certifications.
How to Verify FSC Claims
Unfortunately, "greenwashing" is common in the furniture industry. Follow these steps to verify compliance:
- Look for the Certificate Code: Authentic FSC products feature a license code (e.g., *FSC-C012345*) on the label.
- Search the Database: Enter the license code directly into the FSC Public Search Database (*info.fsc.org*) to verify that the manufacturer's certification is active.
- Chain of Custody (CoC): Verify that every handler in the supply chain—from the forest to the final retailer—holds a valid FSC CoC certificate.
