Sturdy Flat-Pack Assembly
Flat-pack plywood furniture (like IKEA KALLAX or custom CNC-cut birch kits) is highly durable, but only if assembled correctly. Using power tools carelessly or over-tightening metal cam screws can split the wood plies or strip the pre-drilled holes.
4 Golden Rules of Assembly
- Avoid Impact Drivers: Never use an impact driver or drill to tighten wood screws or cam posts. The high torque will spin the screw thread in the wood fiber, permanently ruining its grip. Always use hand screwdrivers.
- Apply Wood Glue to Dowels: For joints utilizing wooden dowels, apply a drop of PVA wood glue inside the dowel hole before inserting. This locks the joints, preventing the furniture from developing sway or wobble over years of use.
- Verify Squareness: Before nailing the thin back panel on, measure diagonally from corner to corner in an 'X' shape. The two diagonal measurements must be identical. If they aren't, the cabinet is racked (out of square), and the drawers or doors will not close properly.
