Film faced plywood — also called shuttering plywood, formwork plywood, or phenolic plywood — is a structural plywood panel coated on both faces with a phenolic resin-impregnated paper film. The film creates a smooth, waterproof, chemically resistant surface that allows concrete to release cleanly after pouring. Test 1: The Scratch Test

  • Genuine phenolic film: Extremely hard to scratch. You will leave a faint white mark but cannot penetrate the film with normal hand pressure. The film is bonded molecularly to the substrate.
  • Fake (melamine paper): Scratches easily, exposing the wood or adhesive layer below. The paper may peel away in flakes.
  • Fake (paint): Paint chips and flakes off readily. You can gouge through to bare wood with a fingernail.

Test 2: The Boiling Water Test

Method: Cut a small sample (100mm × 100mm). Submerge in boiling water for 2 hours.

  • Genuine: Film remains bonded. Surface may dull slightly but does not peel, blister, or separate. Core veneers remain laminated.
  • Fake (melamine): Paper starts peeling within 30 minutes. Blistering is visible within 1 hour. Core begins to delaminate by 2 hours.
  • Fake (paint): Paint dissolves or lifts immediately. Core plies separate within 30–60 minutes.

Test 3: The Edge Inspection

Method: Look at the panel edge under good lighting.

  • Genuine: You can see the film as a distinct, dark layer approximately 0.2–0.5mm thick on each face. It is visually distinguishable from the wood veneer beneath it. Core plies are tight with dark phenolic glue lines.
  • Fake: No visible film layer on the edge. The "coating" is paper-thin (<0.1mm) or invisible. Core glue lines are pale tan (MR adhesive), and you may see gaps or voids in the inner plies.

Test 4: The Smell Test

Method: Cut or sand the surface and smell the dust.

  • Genuine phenolic: Has a mild, slightly sweet, chemical smell — the characteristic odor of cured phenol-formaldehyde resin.
  • Fake (melamine): Sharp, acrid chemical smell — closer to the ammonia-like odor of melamine resins.
  • Fake (paint): Solvent smell — paint thinner, lacquer, or acrylic.

Method: Weigh a full 18mm, 4×8 sheet.
