EN 314-2 is the European standard that specifies requirements for the bonding quality of plywood. Unlike American standards that grade the entire panel as a single unit, EN 314 focuses purely on the strength and durability of the glue lines. It classifies plywood into three bonding classes based on the intended environmental exposure.

Passing EN 314-2 requires subjecting test specimens to cyclic boiling and water immersion, followed by shear testing to verify that the bond can withstand structural stress under high moisture levels.

The Three Bonding Classes

  1. Class 1 (Dry interior): Designed for use in interior applications with no risk of water contact or prolonged high humidity. Typically formulated with standard Urea-Formaldehyde (UF) resins.

Shear Testing and Wood Failure Correlation

After completing the pre-treatment, the wet specimens are placed in a shear testing machine. The machine pulls the sample until it breaks along the glue line (per EN 314-1). To pass, the bond must meet specific shear strength limits correlated with the Wood Failure Percentage. Wood failure measures how much of the broken surface shows torn wood fibers rather than bare adhesive. If the wood fibers tore, it proves the glue line was stronger than the wood itself.
