Laser Material Showdown
When using desktop lasers like the Glowforge, woodcrafters often choose between Draft Board (unfinished MDF) and Baltic Birch plywood. Both materials are outstanding for laser cutting, but they have completely different mechanical properties and finish requirements.
Comparison Table
| Feature | Draft Board (Unfinished MDF) | Baltic Birch Plywood |
|---|---|---|
| **Core Material** | Compressed wood fibers & resin | Alternating birch veneers |
| **Edge Quality** | Dark brown, uniform, zero soot | Light golden with striped plies |
| **Strength** | Moderate, brittle under tension | Extremely high, flexible |
| **Grain Texture** | None (perfectly smooth face) | Beautiful natural birch grain |
| **Best Finishes** | Primer + spray paint | Clear coat, stain, or oil |
| **Cost (3mm)** | ~$2.50 per sq. ft | ~$4.00 per sq. ft |
Key Differences
- Strength and Durability: Baltic Birch plywood is significantly stronger. It uses continuous cross-grain wood plies, meaning it can be dropped or flexed without breaking. Draft Board lacks grain structure and will snap under moderate pressure.
- Paintability: Draft Board has a perfectly uniform, grain-free surface. It is the absolute best material for painted projects because there is no grain to telegraph through the paint. Baltic Birch, however, looks much better when stained or clear-coated to display its natural wood textures.
- Smoke & Odor: Draft Board uses more resin than plywood. During cutting, it produces more smoke and a distinct sweet odor. Excellent ventilation is required.
