Vinyl records are heavy. A 12-inch LP weighs roughly 0.5 lbs (including the sleeve). When you stack 80 to 100 records in a single shelf cubby, you are placing 40 to 50 lbs of static load on a narrow shelf span.

Cheap particle board shelving (like target or budget cabinets) will bow, sag, and eventually collapse under record loads.
