Choosing a Desk Converter
If you cannot replace your existing heavy office desk, a desktop sit-stand converter is the best way to add standing options. The two most common mechanical configurations are Z-Lift and X-Lift.
Mechanical Differences
- Z-Lift Converters (e.g., VariDesk): The frame lifts upward and forward in an arc.
- *Pros:* Very easy to pull up because the weight shifts toward you.
- *Cons:* Requires extra space in front of the desk because the keyboard tray sticks out further when fully extended.
- X-Lift Converters: The frame lifts straight up and down vertically.
- *Pros:* Ideal for compact spaces or shallow desks since the footprint never shifts forward.
- *Cons:* Can require more physical lift effort near the top of the travel height.
