Mattress Foundations Compared
A mattress is only as good as the bed frame support slats underneath it. If the slats sag or bend under load, the mattress will dip in the middle, causing back pain. The two most common slat materials are Birch Plywood (often bent or arched) and Solid Pine boards.
Performance Analysis
- Solid Yellow Pine Slats: Typically 1x3 or 1x4 boards. They are stiff and cheap.
- *Cons:* Pine is prone to seasonal warping. Over time, knots in the pine boards can crack or break under weight.
- Birch Plywood Slats (Arched/Sprung Slats): Multi-ply birch veneers curved upward.
- *Pros:* The curved profile acts like a suspension system, flexing under your shoulders and hips while pushing up in the center to keep the spine aligned.
- *Cons:* Slightly more expensive, requires side holders.
