Tear-out is the splintering and chipping that occurs on the edges of wood veneer when it is cut by a saw blade. To understand how to prevent it, you must look at the mechanical forces at play. As a table saw blade rotates, the teeth rise up through the throat plate, enter the bottom of the plywood panel, and exit through the top face.
On the bottom face, the blade teeth push the wood fibers *into* the body of the plywood, which supports them and results in a clean cut. On the top face, however, the teeth exit the wood, pulling the fibers *away* from the panel. Without physical support, these fragile face veneers lift and fracture, creating unsightly tear-out. This guide details the woodworking shop techniques used to eliminate this problem.
Cutting Setup Parameters

Blade Direction & Face Orientation
The direction of blade rotation dictates which side of your panel remains clean:
- Table Saws: The blade cuts from the bottom up. Therefore, the good face of your plywood must go UP. The bottom face will remain clean, while the top face is susceptible to exit tear-out.
- Track Saws and Circular Saws: The blade rotates in the opposite direction, cutting from the top down. For these tools, the good face must go DOWN.
- Miter Saws: The blade cuts from the front to the back and down. Place the good face UP and against the fence.

Zero-Clearance Inserts (ZCIs)
The standard throat plate (insert) that comes with most table saws has a wide gap around the blade to accommodate angled bevel cuts. This gap leaves the wood fibers unsupported. A zero-clearance insert has a slot cut by the specific blade you are using, leaving virtually zero gap between the insert and the blade teeth.
How to Create a Zero-Clearance Insert
- Source the Blank: Cut a piece of 1/2" Baltic Birch plywood or phenolic sheet to match the shape of your saw's throat plate. Use the original plate as a template.
- Install Leveling Screws: Thread small grub screws into the corners of the blank to adjust its height flush with the table top.
- Cut the Slot: Clamp the insert down using a scrap board across the table saw fence. Turn the saw on and slowly raise the blade up through the insert to cut the slot.
Advanced Cutting Techniques
The Scoring Cut Method
If your table saw does not have a dedicated scoring blade (standard on industrial panel saws), you can mimic this process with a two-pass cut:
- Pass 1 (Scoring): Lower the blade so only the tips of the teeth project about 1/16" (1.5mm) above the table. Push the plywood through. This score-cuts the bottom veneer without cutting through the sheet.
- Pass 2 (Through-Cut): Raise the blade to its full cutting height and make the final cut. The pre-scored line will prevent splintering.
The Tape Method
For quick cuts, apply a strip of high-quality blue painter's tape along the cut line on the exit face of the wood. Press it down firmly with a wooden block to ensure complete adhesion. Cut directly through the tape. The adhesive holds the wood fibers together, preventing them from lifting as the teeth exit.
