Understanding Hardwood Plywood Grading: The ANSI/HPVA HP-1 Standard

Hardwood plywood is graded under the American National Standard for Hardwood and Decorative Plywood (ANSI/HPVA HP-1). This standard dictates the visual characteristics allowed on both the face and back veneers of a panel, as well as core construction quality.

Understanding this standard is crucial when purchasing cabinet-grade oak or birch panels for furniture and custom standing desks.

1. Face Veneer Grading (Letters: A to E)

The face of the plywood panel is graded with letters. Grade A is the highest quality, while Grade E allows the most natural characteristics and repairs.

  • Grade A (Premium): Nearly flawless face. Matches veneer color and grain patterns (book-matched or slip-matched). No open defects. Only minor sapwood or small burls allowed. Ideal for high-end furniture and clear varnish finishes.
  • Grade B (Select): Smooth surface. Slight color variation and minor patches are allowed. Smooth, tight knots under 1/8" permitted. Suitable for light stain or paint.
  • Grade C (Natural): Allows unlimited sapwood, color variation, and sound tight knots up to 1/2". Pinholes and minor splits are permitted.
  • Grade D (Utility): Contains open knots up to 3/4", larger color contrasts, and patches. Used for concealed furniture backs.
  • Grade E (Shop): Structural panel with visual defects. Used where appearance doesn't matter.

2. Back Veneer Grading (Numbers: 1 to 4)

The back side of the panel is graded with numbers, where 1 is the cleanest and 4 is utility grade.

  • Grade 1: Void-free, matching veneer. Suitable for visible cabinet interiors.
  • Grade 2: Permits sound tight knots and minor veneer joints.
  • Grade 3: Utility grade. Allows open defects up to 1", rough sanding, and core telegraphing.
  • Grade 4: Structural backer. Knots up to 1-1/2", splits, and joint overlaps allowed.

Common Panel Specifications

  • A/1 Grade: Premium face and clean back. Ideal for furniture where both sides are visible (e.g., shelving units, desk privacy panels).
  • A/3 Grade: Premium face with a utility back. Perfect for desktops or kitchen cabinets where the bottom or back is hidden.
  • B/BB (Baltic Birch equivalent): Clean select face with minor patches, functional back with sound knots. Standard for workshop fixtures and structural CNC projects.
